PilotEdit Version Number [Solved]

Postby buntoro » Sun Jul 03, 2011 5:35 am

Hi Ray,

This is fully chit chat regarding PilotEdit revision number.
I've noticed how PilotEdit grows in version number quite often, between major and minor version.
4.4.0 to 4.5.0 to 4.6.0 and next would be 4.7.0
Just a little bit curios, why don't increase the subminor version, i.e 4.5.0 to 4.5.1 to 4.5.2 instead of jumping into 4.6.0 already? :)

Hi Buntoro,

It is a very interesting question.
In fact we don't have a strict rule about PilotEdit major and minor version. The version number just grows in this way, i.e. 4.5.0 to 4.6.0 to 4.7.0.
We only create version with minor version when a critical defect is found with a newly published version.
For example, if a critical defect is found immediately after publishing PilotEdit 4.6.0, PilotEdit 4.6.1 will be created to fix this defect.

Thank you

Hi Ray,

I see. That should do.
Actually, I was comparing with other softwares which are using the third digit to address on some bug fixes as well as critical fix, while using the second one to address a quite huge fix.
The first digit would always comes later for combining many bug fixes as well as major improvement on the software itself.
I just ask because PilotEdit never grows up on the third digit version and makes me wonder.
Well, my opinion is the third digit doesn't have to be a critical fix since I think PilotEdit is quite stable at the moment, so a minor changes could use it.
But, I guess your choice is OK too.

Thanks for the information provided! I really value your findings on this upgrade! You only create version with minor version when a critical defect is found with a newly published version.
